Experience A Historic Christmas By Candlelight At Old Sturbridge Village

Sturbridge, Massachusetts was first settled in 1729. Although more than 100 years younger than New England’s oldest settlements, the town has become synonymous with the early colonies.

This is all thanks to the 200 acre living museum that is Old Sturbridge Village. It includes 59 antique buildings, three water-powered mills, and a working farm that recreate life in New England during the 1790s through the 1830s.

Although quaint and fun all year round, the holidays are definitely the most popular time to visit. Throughout the month of December, the village transforms into a winter wonderland with the Christmas by Candlelight celebration.

Traditional holiday events include live musical performances, storytelling, sleigh rides, festive foods, bonfires, and candlelit strolls through the decorated Village Common.

As per the OSV website:

Christmas by Candlelight runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from December 2-23, plus Thursday, December 21.

The park is closed during the day on these dates in order to accomodate the work that goes into the evening festivities.

Although not historically accurate, no Christmas village would be complete without Santa and his doting wife! The North Pole Village features a magical talking Christmas tree, visits with Santa and his elves, Mrs. Claus’ Bake Shop, and an expanded train display.

There are also nightly tree lightings…

and the ever-popular annual gingerbread house contest!

Driving in from out-of-state? Take advantage of the conveniently located Old Sturbridge Inn & Reeder Family Lodges. They are currently offering a special Christmas by Candlelight package which includes one night’s lodging for two adults, as well as Christmas by Candlelight admission.

Package prices for two for Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights start at $141 and Saturday nights start at $155.  Final room rate depends on room type booked. OSV members receive a discount.
