The Decadent Artisanal Doughnut Trend Has Hit Providence

Lately it seems that the best food trends involve taking simple favorites and elevating them to gourmet standards. Although the doughnut is no stranger to this treatment – what with the raging success of the Cronut – Providence had not yet jumped on the fancy doughnut bandwagon. Until now.

Bryan Gibb, co-owner of BOLT coffee, which currently has 2 Providence locations, came up with the idea for Knead Doughnuts, a unique confectionery serving old-fashioned, cake and brioche style doughnuts in exotic and decadent flavors.

There are 2 fritter options – apple and raspberry – made from brioche pieces and fresh fruit, but other than that, it’s nothing but doughnuts at Knead! Well, with a side of coffee, of course. Gibb wants the brand to focus on community, timelessness and approachability.

There are a few novelty flavors like Earl Gray and Passion Fruit, but overall Knead doughnuts are familiar favorites like glazed vanilla, chocolate cake and Boston cream. Just done really well.

Knead Doughnuts is located at  32 Custom House St. in the financial district. After a soft opening in January it is now open to the public and offers vaulted ceilings, bright white walls with elegant gold trimmings, and a window view right into the kitchen so patrons can witness the magic as it happens.

Both BOLT Coffee locations co-habitate with other businesses, so Knead is Gibb’s first effort with building development. He took care to be thrifty and community conscious with the renovations. With an interest in urban planning and development, he hopes to see Knead succeed and expand to other locations.

Gibb has partnered with charity groups across Providence including the Izzy Foundation that supports the families of children with chronic and debilitating illnesses. Knead provides doughnuts and donations for events such as school fundraisers and the upcoming Providence Marathon, as well as homeless shelters and nonprofit groups.
